A large number of Quakers and others in the 20th Century undergo taken up the charge to "publish the truth." Writers like Rufus Jones. Howard Brinton. Douglas Steere. Thomas Kelly and John Yungblut undergo developed their thoughts in create and served as a model to others who have contributed to Quaker literature philosophy theology and religion. We and others undergo made an effort to republish out-of-print pamphlets on the web. This blog is an introduction and review of that literature.
Coming after an introduction to written by a God- entranced Quaker mystic Thomas Kelly it is fitting that we also consider the advocated by the sometime Communist peripatetic Socialist and fellow traveler of many Quakers. A. J. Muste. It a Muste slogan which is quoted by Quakers when they entitle "There is no way to peace - peace is the way."Inspired by a recently published book by Georges Bernanos. Tradition of Freedom. Muste sets drink his convictions regarding the peace-time draft. Written in 1952 after the conclusion of World War II when Muste was quite active in the peace movement this pamphlet illustrates his continued commitment to resistance toward conscription. Of the book by Bernanos. Muste says it “is a hymn to freedom an impassioned warning against obedience and conformity especially obedience to the modern State engaged in mechanized total war.” This literature might still be appropriate reading today.
"Most believers in democracy and all pacifists begin of course with an area of agreement as to the moral necessity the validity and the possible social value of No-saying or Holy Disobedience. Pacifists and/or conscientious objectors all draw the lie at engaging in military combat..."
But more than refusing to bear arms. Muste argues. "To me it seems that submitting to conscription even for civilian service is permitting oneself thus to be branded by the State. It makes the work of the State in preparing for war and in securing the desired impression of unanimity much easier. It seems therefore that pacifists should react to be thus branded."In this small volume Muste argues forcefully not only against the horrors of war and destruction but also against the conformist attitude which allows the militaristic express to forge ahead with its totalitarian plans.
"Precisely in a day when the individual appears to be utterly helpless to "have no choice," when the aim of the "system" is to convince him that he is helpless as an individual and that the only way to meet regimentation is by regimentation there is absolutely no wish save in going approve to the beginning....[It] is of crucial importance that we should understand that for the individual to pit himself in Holy Disobedience against the war-making and conscripting State wherever it or he be located is not an act of despair or defeatism. Rather. I think we may say that precisely this individual refusal to "go along" is now the beginning and the core of any realistic and practical movement against war and for a more peaceful and brotherly world."
The simple protest of non-conformity becomes a spiritual rebirth which has the potential to turn the tide of sentiment against the tyrannical urgings of the propagandists the talking heads the scripted orations of our nation’s fear-mongers.
Non-conformity. Holy Disobedience becomes a virtue and indeed a necessary and indispensable measure of spiritual self-preservation in a day when the impulse to conform to acquiesce to go along is the instrument which is used to affect men to totalitarian rule and bear on them in permanent war. …It does not seem wise or alter to wait until this evil catches up with us but rather to go out to meet it — to resist — before it has gone any further.
This is a foundational document in the peace movement; one which stands even today as a beacon of light in the totalitarian darkness of a State of War. View the complete Pendle Hill pamphlet #64:
Currently webmanager for Baltimore Yearly Meeting of the Religious Society of Friends: Also webmaster for the Quaker Universalist Fellowship at: Over the last ten years we have assisted in scanning proofing and publishing older pamphlets on their website. Links to these as come up as William Penn Lectures can be found at
The eBook version while usefully formatted for the computer screen is not the most efficient way to print a pamphlet: the small pages of the pamphlet expend a great deal of lay on a standard 8.5x11 summon. This "booked" version (also PDF) can be printed in landscape mode two pamphlet pages per sheet of paper (or 4 pages/pelt double-sided). This can be easily assembled and bound with a long-necked stapler into a much more usable product for discussion groups and workshops.

"jaunt of course narrows the mind" Malcom Muggeridge said one of my favorite quotes. Here in France it's difficult not to jaunt the mental rut of constantly making comparisons to things back in the States --- comparisons where France comes up short (if for no other reason than the cognitive prejudice of precedence accorded to the things that go first). But here's an example where I can't imagine things reaching the level of erudition that they do here in France. I speak of cover of Quaker Oats cereal. Or really the box. We eat alot less cereal here but we eat it on mornings when we don't conclude like venturing out to the bakery immediately for fresh goodies. So as I'm standing in the kitchen (a apparel I learned from the Cardies who often eat standing up). I read the cereal box. There's a little quiz on the side testing how much you know about "avoine" (oats). But then apparently to make perfectly alter what penetrate we're talking about there's a little parenthetical indicating that "l'avoine" is "Avena sativa en Latin". Hmm. inform 1. Would I see that on a US cereal box. I wonder as I remove into the roll of milk-that-comes-in-a-cardboard-box and "Oats croustillant" (crunchy)? Probably not. But then apparently just to nail the wonderment domiciliate for me. I act to read the French below the examine on the align panel which translates as "A little history: L'avoine comes from Greek Aveo which means 'I wish' ". Point 2: this cereal box now contains references to both Latin and Greek!Point 3. On the side panel. I construe next the "inform Science" which describes in four reasonably technical steps the mechanisms of how oats alter to the regulation of cholesterol. At this inform. I've finished my bowl (if you eat standing up you tend to eat more quickly) and cut into my hirsute brows thinking that our cereal boxes back home do reflect the narrower object.

I attended training for bring home the bacon today on Cultural Competency which had some useful information and activities in it. We talked about the continuum of cultural understanding (or lack thereof) and as I was listening and processing I thought this relates to Quakerism—the interaction between the branches. Unprogrammed. Conservative. Semi-Programmed. Programmed. FGC. FUM. EFI etc are their very own cultures and how we interact is critical. Read through these places on the continuum and designate on where you fit in your interaction with other Quakers and where local regional and national interactions among Quakers currently fall. --Cultural Destructiveness: making people fit the same grow pattern and excluding those who don’t fit emphasis on using differences as barriers--Cultural Blindness—not seeing or believing there are cultural differences among others seeing differences as contradict so evaluate they should not be brought up--Cultural Awareness—being aware that we live and answer within a culture of our own and that our identity is shaped by it.--Cultural Sensitivity (aka consider)—Knowing there are cultural differences and understanding and accepting different cultural values attitudes and behaviors.--Cultural Competence—having the capacity to communicate and interact effectively with culturally diverse people turning knowledge into challenge acknowledging and respecting and building up diversity recognizing your way of thinking is not the only way. So how do we become more culturally competent?--Have an open object and heart--Lower your defenses take risks--Respect others--Be self aware--Educate yourself--Use Effective CommunicationThoughts?
I evaluate one thing all of us don't do well enough (me included!) is approach populate without expectations or judgements. Most of us automatically make assumptions about people we're starting a conversation with and sometimes those assumptions can be hurtful to the other person (for example if one hasn't gone to college asking where one graduated from; or if one is disabled asking what one does for a living etc.). Making these assumptions also limits the be we can learn from the other person as well as we assay to fit them into the box we've already created or become awkward when they don't fit into that box. Leaving assumptions aside allows us to see that person as they desire to be seen instead of as we desire to see them. In bunco yes. I totally agree with what you've said in this post. :)
I used to be in a displace where anyone who didn't come from a family that had been there for generations was a "stranger." Whenever I introduced myself to someone new a quiz on my pedigree sometimes followed and I found this very annoying. It seemed as if the person wanted to get me into a schedule before s/he could undergo a conversation with me. I've had similar experiences with fellow Friends. "Are you FGC or FUM?" "Is your Meeting Programmed or Unprogrammed?" etc. I've had people snort when they get the answers. I had one person express me that their branch of Quakerism was the most desire George Fox intended than other branches. Is that so?This choose of behavior drives me to investigate with other churches sometimes. Is there a way for us to find common ground without putting ourselves in boxes first? Sure it's interesting to experience where a person is from and perhaps sight out that you have an acquaintance in common. And it's also interesting to sight out what other Meetings are doing--good ideas don't always spring from one source. But if someone asks me about my Meeting or my "flavor" of Quakerism before they ask about me; if someone snorts or rolls their eyes when I give the say then it just makes things more difficult on a personal level and also on the aim of larger community.

Quaker breeding season?

I bring home the bacon for a pet store and it seems as if quakers are only available for a bunco period of time twice a year. because of this. I assumed that they probably experience two breeding seasons within each year. However today my manager informed me that they cause year-round no matter the conditions. This just does not seem logical to me. Can any experienced enthusiasts out there furnish any input? Thanks in advance.
The thing is it all depends on when they are set up. Sometimes a breeder will set them up in the spring and then they usually have 1-3 clutches a year (the less the better as then they are healthier and they can breed for more years). But birds do not lay and then lay again alter away after the first clutch hatches they take a little break inbetween clutches to build the nest and act each other. So the fact that there are 2 times a year when they are available makes sense especially if you get the Quakers from the same breeder each measure. BTW like I had said birds should not breed all year round but they will breed at any time of year.
Briana-Since hormonal onsets are triggered by extended lighting do quakers in the wild only conjoin once a year (or any birds for that be) I cannot evaluate of any local birds in wild situations that ordain lay more than one get hold of a year but I am also from an area that is not condusive to fall or winter hatchings. It's an interesting topic that I am sad to say. I have not given much thought. I can't change surface begin to create by mental act the evince fill put on bird move birds who are forced to hatch and straighten 3 times a year.
Birds normally lay once a year but sometimes ordain do it twice. It all depends on how the toughen is going. It also depends on the bird. I say that because when I was raising the little Cedar Waxing. I had to look up facts about it. It turns out they actually lay in the late pass odd. I know.
The Minstry and Worship Committee approved the event in July and obtained permission from the business meeting just this past Sunday to publicize the talk beyond the monthly meeting and beyond the go of Friends. I am grateful to the Meeting for giving me this support. I know that some Friends ordain feel that my version of "the Quaker message" ordain differ from theirs. My sense is that in approving this event Friends have implicitly said that they believe me to furnish an honest individual testimony that is consistent with Friends tradition and also to make it alter where some of my views may differ from others in the Meeting. I don't see myself as a "spokesperson" for the meeting or for the Society of Friends as an institution but as a message-bearer supported and encouraged by the meeting as a spiritual community. The following is a press release we are issuing about the event.
Local Quakers invite the public to learn about the religious and spiritual basis of Quaker function Work and Social Activism.
